North Star New Music Festival

The North Star New Music Festival, previously the New Horizons Music Festival, showcases recently composed music and artistry and is held each fall on the Truman State University campus. In this exciting weekend festival, we invite guest composers and artists to campus to present workshops and performances, as well as featuring performances from students and faculty in an exciting collaboration to celebrate new music. Traditionally, each closing concert features the world premiere of a newly commissioned piece for one of our campus ensembles.
This festival is hosted as a collaboration between Sigma Alpha Iota and the Truman State Department of Music.

North Star 2025
With the support of Sigma Alpha Iota’s Impact Grant, the North Star New Music Festival took place October 24–25, featuring three guest artists and commissioned composer William Averitt. The festival opened with a performance by the award-winning Vinola Trio, including our own staff pianist Dr. Xiang. Internationally renowned clarinetist Jorge Montilla presented both a masterclass and concert, and interdisciplinary artist Cherie Sampson gave two performances of her one-woman show "every.single.one", featuring music by Truman faculty member Dr. Gran.
The festival also highlighted performances by students, faculty, and campus ensemble Uncommon Practice. The closing concert premiered "Toward Evening" for SATB choir by William Averitt, performed by Truman’s Cantoria Choir. This year brought an exciting range of performances, and we are looking forward to planning next year’s festival!
